In this interview, Sofía Tirado Sarti, Energy and Climate Programme Researcher at the Elcano Royal Institute, outlines the most significant findings from the latest study on the social perception of water in Spain.
[es] Aunque la ciudadanía muestra una alta preocupación por los problemas hídricos, persisten percepciones muy arraigadas y esa inquietud no siempre se traduce en comportamientos proactivos ni en mayor apoyo a determinadas medidas. Tirado explica por qué persiste esa visión. Con un respaldo masivo a la reutilización y la desalación para usos no potables, pero claras reservas sobre su consumo doméstico, especialmente del agua regenerada, la experta señala la principal barrera: la desconfianza en la calidad.
[en] Although citizens show a high level of concern about water issues, deeply rooted perceptions persist and this concern does not always translate into proactive behaviour or greater support for specific measures. Tirado explains why these views persist. She points out that there is considerable support for the use of reclaimed and desalinated water for non-potable applications, but clear reservations about domestic consumption, especially of reclaimed water. The expert goes on to outline the main barrier: lack of confidence in the quality.
